Abstract

This chapter discusses the most exemplifying cases from Riera’s aforementioned Atlas and added his own case studies, collected over the many years he has been a renowned professional and leader in the fields of forensics and psychology in Spain. Volumes have been written on the too-often lethal nature of aggression on and by human beings. Killing someone or killing oneself is within the reach of almost everyone. Since psychiatry came into existence, mental health professionals have endeavored, as Bernat-N. Tiffon reminds us in his fitting introduction, to untangle the complexities of madness, with the dual aim of healing the sick and preventing illness. In terms of human beings helping each other, this means trying to help the attacker as well as the victim. The possibility of a patient taking their own life is a mental health professional’s nightmare. Most of the time, a victim of suicide has been diagnosed and treated with psychopharmacological treatment and, increasingly, psychological treatment.
