Abstract

Crystals of [Ru(C10H8N2)3]2[Co(CN)6]Cl.8H2O (C10H8N2 = bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) which belong to the space group C2 were characterized by two `pseudo-racemic' crystallographically independent [Ru(bpy)3]2+ cations. Three kinds of layers are found in the crystal structure: (i) the layer consisting of the Λ-[Ru(bpy)3]2+ cations. Three kinds of layers are found in the crystal structure: (i) a layer consisting of Δ-[Ru(bpy)3]2+ cations and water molecules; (ii) a layer of [Co(CN)6]3− and Cl− anions and water molecules; (iii) a layer of Δ-[Ru(bpy)3]2+ cations and water molecules. The layers are stacked in the order (i), (ii), (iii) and (ii) almost perpendicularly to the c axis. Some O⋯O, O⋯N(cyano) and O⋯Cl hydrogen bonds construct networks within and between the layers.
