Abstract

Around the secluded islands of animals, plants, and fungi lies a rich ocean of oft-neglected eukaryotic diversity—the protists. Too small and “simple” for macrobiologists, mistrusted by microbiologists for carrying nuclei, the protists offer enough wonders and bizarre stories to satisfy scientists and artists alike. They often display an outlandish structural and functional genius evident in the architecture of their own bodies and in the things they do.
