Abstract

A study was made on the protective effect of hypoxia and dithiothreitol (DDTT) on X-ray-induced ovule sterility and embryonic lethality in Arabidopsis. Both hypoxia and DTT gave on pronounced and additive reduction of radiation-induced genetic damage. The reduction was significantly higher for ovule sterility than for embryonic lethals. It is suggested that non-fertilized ovules contain ratio of strand breaks/other damage than embryonic lethals do, for hypoxia and DTT are shown specifically to give a reduction of strand breaks.
