Abstract

4. Two potsherds from a large bowl of late Byzantine type, probably of the sixth or seventh century, inscribed in Syriac (see Fig. 5). I propose to read this as sheviva. This is a common enough Syriac word meaning spark or ray although it has not been previously attested as a proper name, so far as I know. In this case it may be the name of the potter, or else his trademark. There is no doubt about the reading except as regards the first letter, but a shin of very similar form is recorded by Littmann in Syria (Princeton Archaeological Expedition), Division IV, Section B, 1934, p. 15. The inscription in which this shin occurs is dated 601-2 A. D. This agrees perfectly with the probable datet of the vase of which our two sherds formed a part.
