Abstract
1. Brief heating of quenched high-speed steel for tempering at 560–600\dg lowers the hardness from HRC 63-64 to HRC 58-59. This drop of the hardness is similar to that commonly observed after tempering at 250–400\dg for 1 h. With increasing tempering time the hardness of steels R6M3 and R18 increases to a stable value, reaching a maximum value of HRC 64-64.5 at 580 and 600° respectively with holding for 10 and 20 min. 2. Lowering of the hardness can be avoided by double brief tempering of high-speed steel with holding for 10–20 min. Steel R6M3 should be tempered at 580\dg and steel R18 at 600\dg. The treatment presented here is intended for tempering tools individually in automatic lines with heating in a liquid medium at a controlled temperature.
