Abstract

Four site characteristics and seven soil properties are discussed in relation to the disposal of effluents. The properties that limit the assimilation of effluents are listed in terms of the soil criteria used in New Zealand. Systems of effluent disposal are considered for different classes of slope and for different volumes of effluent. Soil groups are rated for their capacity to cope with agricultural effluents. Yellow-brown loams (Andosols) have the ideal combination of properties for effluent disposal.
