Abstract

Compressive pulses ranging from 70 to 560μs in duration were propagated upward through a tube-held column of water with reflection at the free surface causing tensile waves. The propagation process for both tensile and compressive waves was studied. Tensile limits for the fluid were obtained for the above range of pulse durations. Details of the failure process were observed and are discussed.
