SummaryYoung adult rats given a combined infection with Trichinella spiralis and encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus experienced a high incidence of crippling and death while control rats which received the nematode alone remained free of disease. Rats given the virus alone had a much lower incidence of crippling than did those with the combined infection.Rats which received T. spiralis and EMC virus were also distinguishable by a sharp and sustained loss of weight, presence of virus in skeletal muscle and by some differences in muscle histology.The synergistic effect of T. spiralis on EMC virus infection was demonstrable over a period of 10 to 28 days after inoculation with the nematode.
