Abstract

ABSTRACTThe article relates to the undertakings of the United National Movement (UNM) government that focus on the redefinition of political identity and are in line with the European project in the period of 2004–2012. The European project was introduced in Georgia by President Saakashvili and his government after assuming power in 2004. The study attempts to answer the following question: To what extent did the UNM government manage to revise Georgian political identity through the European project? The research demonstrates that within the framework the European project the UNM government targeted, ontological and normative notions of the cognitive structure of the Georgian identity, out of which normative principles were partially handled, while ontological content underwent substantial change. Hence, the impact of the European project is mixed but still considerable.
