Abstract

Pyroptosis is a newly defined programmed cell death that associates with inflammation. Pyroptosis depends on the cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase-1 (caspase-1), accompanied by the release of proinflammatory cytokines, mainly interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). Unlike necrosis and apoptosis, pyroptosis is a unique way of cell death. A growing number of studies have found that pyroptosis related signaling pathway plays an important role in the diseases of central nervous system, including acute brain infection, neurodegenerative disease, acute sterile brain injury and chronic sterile central nervous system inflammation. Key words: Pyroptosis; Acute brain infections; Neurodegenerative diseases; Acute sterile brain injuries; Chronic sterile central nervous system inflammation
