Abstract
A “professional education unit” is the body responsible for the preparation of teachers and other professional education personnel. A “unit” generally consists of administrative, policy, program (selected courses and field experiences), and staff components. A “professional education unit” has the ultimate responsibility for planning and operating a professional teacher education program. It may be a school, college, department or other administrative body within that institution. In discussions of professionalism in education and in accreditation the “professional education unit” is usually referred to as “the unit.”
