The production of the new space as the solution of outdoor space planning problem

Abstract

The outdoor space has been an interesting part of a university. Many universities create their images by the outdoor spaces designs. As Lefebvre stated that those are called abstract space, the university commodity them. The other spaces are called as lived space, there the users live with cold and hot life and emerged the interaction between groups. Fakultas Ilmu Budaya (FIB) is one faculty in Universitas Sumatera Utara, demonstrates the dynamic outdoor spaces built by their expression needs. The spaces are not safe for they are built by themselves. Illegally, not only for their performance but also for their image. Students are performing their ideas on music and discussing their thoughts in there. The spaces are created naturally along with existing buildings which many times are destroyed by the faculty management. However, students are struggling to have. By the qualitative research method, the research is done by observing and interviewing students continuously. This paper shows how the spaces are not planning matters, but they are also people part of the expression of ideas and thoughts. The student feels happy and sad, free but fear, optimistic and pessimistic, real and unreal. New spaces as the production of students emerged for those.
