Abstract

The article describes a method of producing single, double and multiple slits suitable for demonstrating diffraction and interference in optics. The gratings are produced by evaporating aluminium on to a glass microscope slide through a mask. The mask is cheap and easy to construct. The method provides an interesting exercise in vacuum techniques with an end product which is useful in physics teaching.
