Abstract

I This paper describes some statistical analyses of archaeological material (waster sherds) from a late firstand early second-century Romano-British kiln site. The assumptions underlying the use of statistical techniques are discussed, and a particularly useful test for comparing frequency distributions (the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test) is described. This test could be of much wider application than that described in this paper; for example, it could be of use in dealing with measurements of flint flake and blade assemblages. Higham (I968) mentions its use in a study of the bones of prehistoric European domestic fauna. During the I967 and I968 seasons some two tons of pottery were excavated from the kiln site in London's Highgate Wood (Brown and Sheldon i969a), consisting of wasters found under the following circumstances:
