Abstract

The production of highly excited (24<n*<43) xenon atoms has been investigated in 2-20 keV Xe+ collisions with helium, neon, argon and methane using the field ionization technique. Cross sections are found to scale as (n*)-3 and display regular oscillatory structure characteristic of quantum mechanical phase interference.
