Abstract

The possibility of producing conventional wear resistant alloy layers on Ti alloys by diffusion bonding has been investigated. These layers would exhibit the wear characteristics of the bulk material whilst retaining the advantages of Ti alloys. The diffusion bonding of a wear resistant Co base Stellite alloy (HS6) to Ti-6Al-4V alloy is described. Interlayers of Ta and Ni were used to aid bonding. The microstructure and strength of the joints are reported and the role of interlayers is discussed.
