Abstract

The extremely high resolution required to identify individual levels at high excitation can be obtained indirectly from slow neutrons by using them to produce variable energy gamma rays. The energy variability, resolution, and intensity of these gamma rays are discussed. Estimates of their interactions with nuclear levels are given. These estimates are supported by interpreting recent data on the scattering of thermal-neutron capture gamma rays. (C.E.S.)
