Abstract

to a depth of 230 feet (Abernathy and Jewett, 1946). The miners then started a shaft 7x7 feet wide, and the excavated material was brought to the surface in large buckets pulled up by mules. After mining about 50 feet of limestone, a thick shale was encountered which was easier to excavate (Fig. 2). To save time and money a large room was excavated at about 150 feet where the miners could sleep and eat. That way they could continue their work without interruption (G.W. Hosack, pers. comm. 2011).
