Abstract
The characteristics of a teaching profession and the implications of initiating a teaching council in Lesotho are examined. Problems likely to interfere with the initiation/ establishment of such an institution are discussed. The influence on teacher education of institutions such as teacher education programmes offered in Lesotho, the Lesotho government and the church are discussed and the division among teacher organisations and the government body responsible for the teaching profession are examined. The paper further discusses the Lesotho political context and its influence on the teaching profession. The article ends with an advocacy of the establishment of such a council suggesting that lessons could be learned from the experience of other countries and professions.
