Abstract

From 1971 to 1986 14 002 women took part in the ‘Hamburg Breast Cancer Screening Study by Clinical Investigations and Mammography’. 185 cases of breast cancers have been identified, but 22 of those became clinically apparent within the interval between two regular investigations. Interval carcinomas appeared to have similar T-stages but higher N-stages than screen detected carcinomas. The percentage of interval carcinomas decreased with the age of the patients and the number of rounds of screening.
