Abstract

Abstract I have described important ontological differences in the objects of inquiry of psychological and natural science. Epistemological implications of these differences create a critical methodological dilemma for therapeutic science. This basic conundrum is unresolved by either traditional positivistic or alternative hermeneutic approaches to the conduct of therapeutic science. A greater understanding of this problem seems necessary if therapeutic science is either to advance or be radically reconsidered.
