Abstract

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the role of knights in public order. It presents the misadventure of Balain which depicts the problem of public order. This story is all the more powerful for being a part of a major structural contrast built into this widely read cycle of romances. The contrast is embodied in two knights who possess undoubted and praised prowess, but the results of their knighthood could scarcely be more different. The source of Balain's misery and misfortune is set opposite Galahad, bringer of joy and release. The Unfortunate Knight stands on one side, the Good Knight on the other.
