Abstract

Abstract In both the popular consciousness and the enduring achievements of Western culture, the world of nature is remembered and represented as a familiar part of the biblical story. Biblical images of nature have, in fact, become a standard feature of the Western imagination. One of the now famous examples of this phenomenon in popular culture was the recitation of Genesis 1 on the first moon voyage. To express their amazement at the natural beauty of the planet earth floating in space as a small blue sphere, the Apollo 8 astronauts chose to read, out of all the nature literature of Western culture, the biblical story of creation.
