Abstract

The preoperative phase of the surgical journey or pathway provides the basis for the delivery of safe and effective care; an in-depth assessment of individual needs is required. The intraoperative phase of the pathway can bring with it a number of potential challenges, where the patient may be seen at their most vulnerable. If the healthcare assistant and assistant practitioner (HCA and AP), understand the issues and acknowledge the fear that some people may experience, this can help them to provide care that is safe, kind, considerate and compassionate. The thought of any kind of surgical intervention can instil a profound anxiety and distress in a number of people. Being able to explain the various processes and procedures and the myriad of activities that take place during the intraoperative period can alleviate this distress and anxiety. This article provides an overview of intraoperative care.
