Abstract

An outline is given of the principles used in the injection system of the Birmingham proton synchrotron which make the injection process relatively automatic and free from the necessity of a primary proton beam with an energy of great stability. A simple analysis is made of particle collection in the absence of the radio-frequency acceleration. The basic components and methods of monitoring the injection system are described.
