Abstract
Abstract The principle of effectiveness underlies a series of developments in the sphere of judicial protection and has been recognized as a general principle of Community law by the Court of Justice. It requires the effective protection of Community rights and, more generally, the effective enforcement of Community law in national courts. Effectiveness differs from the general principles of law examined so far in that it is not based directly on the laws of the Member States but derives from the distinct characteristics of Community law, primacy and direct effect.
