Abstract
The principal susceptibilities of single crystals of Er 2 (SO 4 ) 2 8H 2 O have been measured from room down to liquid-air temperature. The results so obtained are explained on the assumption of a single suitable tetragonal electric field existing in the neighbourhood of the Er +++ ion, laying main emphasis on the magnetic anisotropy of the crystal and its temperature variation as the consideration of mean moment is not at all sensitive to crystal field parametrisation.
