Abstract

In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus sends his disciples out on a mission assignment, at roughly the midpoint of each Gospel — indeed, in Luke, Jesus even sends them out twice. This mission assignment is part of their training. Remember that the word “disciple” means “learner”, “student”, or even “apprentice”. The disciples were to learn not just Jesus’ teaching, but also how to do the work that Jesus himself was doing. Why? Because after his death, resurrection, and ascension, they would have to carry that work on in his absence — that was the plan. This mission assignment, then, would give them valuable practical experience. Not only did they observe what Jesus did, then; but, in this mission assignment, Jesus was giving them a chance to do those very things themselves.
