Abstract

The dependence of the viscosity of silica (ludox) sols on the electrolyte concentration of various aqueous solutions has been determined. At volume fractions below 5% the sols were Newtonian and the viscosity was proportional to the volume fraction of the particles. The (large) deviations from the Einstein equations can be explained very well with the effective increase of the particle volume due to the electrical double layer, as described by the Booth equation for the primary electroviscous effect.
