Abstract

The Price of an Image: Representing Photographs of Vietnam in West German Poetry by Mererid Puw DaviesHundreds of poems protesting against the Vietnam War were published in West Germany. Ingo Cesaro's emblematic documentary poem 'Pressepreis' (1969) interprets two news photographs in characteristic ways, underscoring a critique of the media, and profound suspicion of photography and representation which may be understood in relation to both longer German cultural traditions and contemporary anxieties about rapidly changing visual culture. The poem may also be read in poetological terms as thematizing the contradictions of engaged writing in West Germany.
