Abstract

We present the results of a survey of the immediate environment of the old nova GK Per in the J = 2 → 1 line of 12CO at 230 GHz, at higher spatial resolution than previous studies of this area. We find a bipolar emission region which is centred on the nova and whose lobes are expanding symmetrically. The morphology, expansion velocity, mass and dimensions of the bipolar lobes are all within the observed ranges of those associated with planetary nebulae. Our results therefore strongly support previous suggestions that GK Per is surrounded by a ‘fossil’ planetary nebula.
