Abstract

The prevalence of sand flea ( Tunga penetrans) among primary and post-primary school pupils in the Choba area of the Niger Delta was studied. Overall, 30·4% of the pupils were infected with the parasite. More male pupils (33·8%) than female pupils (27·1%) harboured the infection. The infections occurred on the pulp and side of their toes rather than the sole of their feet or dorsum of their toes. A progressive decline in the prevalence rate with age was also recorded. These results are briefly discussed in relation to the known epidemiology of tungiasis.
