Abstract

The mental health of people in prison remains a public health priority, with a high prevalence of mental illness among prison populations globally.1 Comorbidity (ie, the coexistence of two or more mental health diagnoses) is also common, particularly with alcohol and substance use, and the population with dual disorders present considerable challenges in custody and on release.2 Imprisonment offers an opportunity to identify and treat mental illnesses and substance use disorders to improve outcomes for this population.
