Abstract

Abstract Objective: This is an investigation into the prevalence of child psychological, physical, emotional, and ritualistic abuse among high school students in the Northern Province of South Africa. Method: 414 students in standard nine and ten in three high schools filled in a retrospective self-rating questionnaire in a classroom setting. The questionnaire asked for the demographic variables of the participants; psychological, physical, and emotional abusive experiences from their parents or adult caretakers before the age of 17 years, and ritualistic abusive experiences before the age of 17 years; and finally, for the self-perception of the participants about his or her being abused as a child, and his or her overall rating of own-childhood. Result: Result shows the prevalence rates to be as follows: 80.7% (N=334) for psychological abuse, 19.8% (N=82) for physical abuse, 26.3% (N=109) for emotional abuse, 8.0% (N=33) for ritualistic abuse. 13.5% (N=45) of the psychologically abused, 24.4% (N=20) of t...
