Abstract

The rampart incidence of child abuse manifesting itself inform of street hawking has been an issue of growing con- cern. It has risen to constitute a social menace in various countries of the world with Nigeria situation being spectacular. The study sought to explain the socio-economic determinants of street hawking among children, focusing on Ojoo, Molete and Iwo Road motor parks in Ibadan Municipality. Interview method of generating data was adopted with samples selected on the basis of accidental sampling technique. Major socio-economic factors were examined as possible determinants of street hawking. It was however discovered that the down turn in the economic fortunes of the country has devastated the budget of some Nigerian families. And amidst such financial austerity, some Nigerian parents and guardians abuse their wards through street hawking as a measure of supplementing the family income.
