M. Abstract Published work on the integrated translational absorption coefficient of homopolar and non-polar gases is extended to obtain the frequency dependence for the case where the exchange forces are negligible. Expressions are derived for the pressure-induced monochromatic binary absorption coefficients for a homopolar diatomic gas, mixtures of a homopolar diatomic gas and a non-polar monatomic gas, and mixtures of non-polar monatomic gases. The cases considered are those for which quadrupolar induction and overlap forces are both responsible for inducing the dipole moment. The intermolecular forces are assumed to be isotropic. The expressions are evaluated numerically for the case of H2 using the Lennard-Jones model for the intermolecular potential. The matrix elements were computed numerically by means of a high-speed electronic computer and are tabulated to allow calculation of the translational profile for H2 at arbitrary temperatures. The results at 100 , 3O0 , and 600 K are presented graphically and the results at 77 K are compared with a published experimental profile in the region from 80 to 180 .
