Abstract

The experimental conditions necessary for the resistometric detection of the pressure-induced bismuth III-IV transition are given and a value of 42·7 kilobars obtained for the start of the transition. The resistance-pressure characteristic shows the shape of the forward transition. A short discussion of recent crystallographic data suggests that the transition may be due to a modification of the lamellar structure of the bismuth III polymorph.
