Since first hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) had been attempted in 1983, the cumulative cases of HSCT were reached to 4,071 till 2001, and the number of certified HSCT hospitals were also reached to 30 till July 2002, in Korea. This study was conducted to review the state of advanced practice nursing and if possible, to investigate possibility of extended nursing practice in the field of HSCT. 8 HSCT coordinators and 2 oncology clinical nurse specialists were working at 6 hospitals among 30 HSCT certified hospitals (type A), and 13 dual-appointed HSCT coordinators with another positions also working at 13 hospitals (type B), and there were no coordinators at remaining 11 hospitals(type C). Whereas mean numbers of HSCT cases were 16 at type B and C institutes annually, 55 at type A institutes. And at type B institutes, HSCT coordinators participated in HSCT limitedly and involved in administration and coordination mainly. However, at type A institutes, coordinators and oncology clinical nurse specialists worked at the whole HSCT processes, including standardized roles on patient care, education, consultation, coordination, research, and administration. In order to extend the advanced practice nursing in HSCT area, we make efforts on definite job descriptions of HSCT coordinator or clinical nurse specialists, proving effectiveness through nursing research, legal recognition on qualification and practice-related conditions.
