Abstract

Since the smashing of the gang of four, the Chinese Communist regime under Hua Kuo-feng and Teng Hsiao-p'ing has convened national conferences in the areas of industry, agriculture, finance and trade, railroads, and science and technology. Problems in all of these areas are now being resolved as a consequence. In such an atmosphere, what is the situation with regard to social science research? Will China be able to convene a national conference on social science research? Has China been able to identify modern goals for social science research work? All of these problems have a definite relation to the major question of whether China will be able to realize the four modernizations.
