Abstract

The transverse aether drag experiment of Jones (1972, 1975) is explained by calculating the effect of the moving glass disk on the lateral diffraction spectra of the index gratings used to detect the lateral displacements. Although the undiffracted light is moving perpendicularly to the transverse motion of the disk, the lateral spectra are not, and are therefore subject to longitudinal effects due to a small component of the disk motion. The result of Landsberg (1961) can therefore be applied, giving a dispersion term in the formula for lateral shift.
