Abstract

Geometrically shaped particles of glasses and glasses containing micro- and nano-crystalline inclusions can be used in coatings and composites for microwave or optical applications. In the present paper, the feasibility of the sol–gel fabrication of shaped particles with millimetre-size is described. Zinc silicate pyramid shaped glass particles were prepared via sol–gel processing using wax moulds for casting. Thermal treatment yielded crack-free and transparent pyramid shaped particles. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and nitrogen gas adsorption measurements of the samples provide evidence for the constitution of the particles.
