Abstract

Abstract The prediction of the long-term aging of synthetic polymeric materials used for conservation can be based on artificially accelerated photo-aging experiments. This methodology requires the definition of experimental conditions and control at the molecular scale of the chemical evolution of the solid polymer. Stabilization strategies can be developed based on the same ‘mechanistic’ approach. The controversial example of ‘soluble nylon’ is re-examined. The loss of reversibility and the physical deterioration of polyamide coatings are attributed to photothermal and thermal oxidation. These reactions can be inhibited through the introduction of a redox antioxidant, leading to an extension of the life of the polymer.
