Abstract

>Experiments on the oxygen-deficient phase in UO/sub 2/ are reported briefly. UO/sub 2/ compacts containing U metal additions were annealed at temperatures up to 2500 deg C and then either quenched or cooled slowly; the quenched compacts showed no second phase, whereas the slowly cooled compacts showed an extremely fine precipitate of U. Single crystals of electrolytic UO/sub 2/ which were heated to 1800 deg C show precipitation of U both on the surface and in the interior of the crystal. (D.L.C.)
