Abstract
The reaction between the hexaborides of Nd, Pr, Ce and La and carbon at temperatures greater than 2000°C has been shown to result in a mixture of recrystallized graphite and the appropriate hexaboride. YbB 6 and YB 6 form graphite, the borocarbides YbB 2C 2 or YB 2C 2 and a small amount of the hexaboride. The precipitated graphite, although highly crystalline, had a larger interlayer spacing than hexagonal single crystalline and normal electro-graphite ranging from 3·377 Å to 3·462 Å in samples obtained from different hexaborides. Spectrographic analysis showed the graphite to contain small amounts of rare earth metal and boron. This leads to the suggestion that the increased interlayer spacing is caused by the incorporation of these elements into the graphite lattice. The solubility of carbon in LaB 6 is reported in the range of temperature from 2000°C to 2600°C.
