Abstract

The main geological events recognised from the southern tip of Greenland are as follows: Post-plutonic phase. Late-Phanerozoic faulting and emplacement of NNW-SSE and E-W dolerite dykes. Gardar (1000-1250 m.y.) faulting and emplacement of one or more generations of olivine dolerite dykes (dominantly N-S). Late-plutonic rapakivi suite: Emplacement of appinitic hornblende-diorite sills. Emplacement of rapakivi granites, monzonites, diorites and norites (circa 1650 m.y.). Migmatite complex: Migmatisation, formation of concordant granite sheets, amphibolite facies metamorphism, main phase(s) of folding. Supracrustal series of semipelites overlain by marbles, conglomerates, psammites and basic volcanics.

  • The migmatite complex is cut by numerous dykes and sllls of basaltic composition, which post-dating the main deformation of the migmatites are locally deformed, and occasionally disrupted, by movements thought to be connected with emplacement of the main igneous suite

Introduction

The main geological events recognised from the southern tip of Greenland are as follows: Post-plutonic phase. Migmatisation, formation of concordant granite sheets, amphibolite facies metamorphism, main phase(s) of folding Supracrustal series of semipelites overlain by marbles, conglomerates, psammites and basic volcanics The rocks of the migmatite complex form generally flat-Iying units with the most strongly migmatised rocks, semipelitic gneisses, underlYlllg less altered psammites, conglomerates, marbles, and basic volcanics, which occur only in the northern part of the area.
