Abstract

The belief in the extraordinary power of a deceased saint was reflected by many late medieval images. The narratives about posthumous miracles were associated with rituals and other practices, important for the order of the society in the given period. One important group of images supported the cults of the relics (e.g. their miraculous finding or ritualized translatio) and of the grave (mostly healing miracles on this place). Nevertheless, the mediating rôle of saints in performing miracles did not require the actual presence of the relics. Some narratives about posthumous miracles supported the church rituals such as the Eucharistic cult or the sacrament of confession. The apparitions of saint could strengthen their authority in confrontation with secular rulers.
