Abstract

As academics in business schools have talked about scholarship, this emerging conversation has become a form of institutionalized talk. We consider how over time, this conversation has become institutionalized. We theorize about how professional status and authority generated a research agenda that rewards purity and depth to such an extent that it has become hegemonic and antithetical to research, and how it also lacks mastery over disorder, which is antithetical to practice. As we use the past to explain the current situation, we also recover remedies from our history for how to restore our research imagination.
