Abstract
Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most important bacterial pathogens in respiratory tract infections. Together with untypeable Haemophilus influenzae it is one of the two most common causes of acute otitis media (AOM). In addition, it is the most frequent cause of bacterial community acquired pneumonia, and one of the leading organisms causing sinusitis, sepsis, and meningitis.
