Abstract

AbstractThe excessive utilization of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides in traditional agricultural practices has caused adverse effects on our ecosystem. The increasing population and thereby demand for food security and ecological balance led researchers to find substitutes for safer and fruitful agricultural practices. In the last decade, various scientific studies have demonstrated that employment of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has emerged as a hopeful organic tool for enhancing harvest yields by encouraging plant growth through environment-friendly ways. Rhizomicrobiome play crucial roles in improving soil texture and fertility, regulating nutrient and hormone balance, secreting extracellular molecules and biostimulants, inducing resistance against biopathogens, and modulating plant stress responses, resulting in augmentation of plant growth and development. These studies resulted in exploration of multifaceted role PGPRs with an aim to fully use their potential for crop production and agricultural sustainability. This review gives an outline of the distinctive properties of PGPR and their PGP mechanisms as well as highlights the application or commercialization of PGPR as a biological tool in enhancing agricultural productivity.KeywordsAgricultureBiofertilizationPlant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR)Sustainable development
